The Dinosaur Trading Game from Pattern Press is a free downloadable PDF math game designed to build strong understanding of place value and lay the foundation for regrouping.
This hands-on game helps students explore number relationships in a playful and meaningful way. As they play, students develop place value understanding by trading and exchanging “dinosaurs,” while also strengthening skills in pattern recognition, prediction, and problem solving. Students naturally begin to see how numbers are structured and how quantities can be grouped and regrouped.
The game begins with three dinosaurs as the trading number (base three). Once students are comfortable, the trading number can be increased to four dinosaurs (base four). As understanding grows, the trading system can be expanded further, allowing students to deepen their understanding of place value in a flexible and developmentally appropriate way.
